KBOO Community Radio is the golden
thread that ties the jewels of the peace, justice, civil rights, queer,
sustainable food and agriculture, non-commerical music and other
life-affirming communities together. It is the
reason that Portland has the strongest progressive population in the
country. KBOO played a major role in the birth and implementation of
Mirador (as well as many, many other businesses and organizations). |

People's Food Co-op has been
feeding the community since 1970. All of their produce is organic and
they always carry organic versions of products when they are available.
Their all-organic Farmers' Market is one of the oldest in the city and
the only year-round market; Wednesdays from 2:00 - 7:00 and there is
always a musician or two to provide great music. There are also food
carts providing healthful meals and treats. People's is an honorary
member of the Seven Corners Progressive Vortex, just five blocks south
of Mirador on 21st Avenue and was a big reason we decided to move into
our building. |

The City Repair Project started in
1996 when a group of people created an illegal tea house in Sellwood
and invited the community to come together. Since then they have
convinced the City of Portland that building community is a good thing
and the city now partners with City Repair on many projects. Their
projects includes Intersection Repair, the Village Building Convergence of
Natural Building projects such as benches and kiosks (Mirador's benches
are a VBC project, as are the Kung-Fu bench up the street and the kiosk
at the Red & Black Café), Earth Day Celebrations of
Localization and many more. City Repair is now a
neighbor of ours in the Seven Corners Progressive Vortex. |

The Red and Black Café
is our neighbor on the other end of the block. They preceded us in the
Seven Corners Progressive Vortex by a few months and was another reason
for us to move into our building. The Red & Black is run by a
workers' collective (as is People's). We have watched as they
continually improve their space with paint, furniture and food. They
serve largely organic vegetarian and vegan soups, pastas, baked goods
and drinks (including beer and wine). But much more than the food, it
is a great community gathering space. From the beginning the Red
& Black has opened its space for community groups to have
meetings, from small to large. You can see groups of three as well as
groups of 50. In fact, the Seven
Corners Localization Initiative, an effort to create a better
community for the Seven Corners area, was born there in a meeting at
which there were probably 100 people, including at least one Portland
city commissioner (Charlie Hales). On many nights they will also have
local musicians playing. Most any time you walk by the Red &
Black it is bustling with activity, a great sign of community support. |

Northwest Resistance Against Genetic
Engineering (NW RAGE) is a non-violent, all volunteer, grassroots
organization dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture and ridding
the earth of this unsafe, corporate-driven genetically engineered
experiment that has been forced upon us. |
